Workshop Description:

In this workshop participants will be challenged to channel inner power and translate it into sound for individual and collective expression. We will explore drums and other percussion instruments of various pitches and materials -- including metal, wood, plastic -- as we embrace the lessons of resistance in musical forms such as Ijexa, Ilu, and Samba Reggae developed by the descendants of enslaved Africans in Brazil and the Caribbean. The experience will be visceral, creative, joyous, and loud. Instruments will be provided. No prior experience necessary.

About the Artist:

Batalá New York is the premier all-women, Black-led percussion ensemble, bringing high-energy performances to the people of New York!

ABOUT HARLEM DANCE CLUB'S GUEST WORKSHOPS
Harlem Dance Club is proud to bring the highest quality teaching artists to people of all ages and abilities for FREE. This month we are spotlighiting some of the groups who have performed in our MOTHERSHIP Dance & Music Festival. Guest Artist Workshops are an opportunity to experience a new or familiar culture, Q&A with the guest artist and be part of the Harlem Dance Club community. Made possible with our partnership with the Manhattan Department of Parks & Recreation.
